What is a "podcast"?

The word "podcast" is the combination of the brand name "iPod" and the word "broadcast".  It refers to any digital audio (and sometims video) media, generally in an MP3 or RSS format, that is made available to individuals via the Internet.  In it's truest form, it is a broadcast similar to a radio program where the "podcaster" speaks, sings, recites poetry, etc.  Podcast "subscribers" then "receive" updates from their favorite "podcasters" directly to iTunes or another MP3 software.

How can I use podcasts with my students?

  • Lectures can be recorded so that students who are absent can access them
  • Students can recite poetry, give an oral report, make a speech, etc. which can then be posted for sharing with parents
  • Students can create a "radio" program and post "interviews" for sharing with others
  • You may find educational podcasts on relevant topics on the internet that your class can listen to

How do students/parents access podcasts?

Podcasts are accessible by either uploading them to a host web site (like www.wildvoice.com), or by posting the audio files on your Edline.  Students and parents can then listen to or download the files to their own computer.

How do I capture the audio?

Through the use of computer headphones that are equipped with a microphone and software, like Audacity or Windows Movie Maker.  Some podcast hosting sites have an integrated recorder, like www.wildvoice.com.  You can also use  a digital voice recorder with USB cable.  This allows you to upload your recordings to your computer.

Is this really an effective tool for learning, or just cool technology?
